It seems that Lionsgate’s marketing department took note of Statham’s abilities as a romantic hero. In an early teaser trailer for The Expend4bles, the editing initially portrays the film as a romantic comedy featuring Lee Christmas and his girlfriend, Gina (played by Megan Fox). Although the trailer eventually reveals itself as an action-packed spectacle, this clever marketing tactic suggested that Statham taking on a different genre would be an unexpected surprise.
It seems that Statham’s action movies have reached their saturation point and need to explore new territory.
Making a change in direction could be a smart move for Statham, considering the decline in quality of his action films. The intended franchise launch of “Operation Fortune: Rise de Guerre” did not pan out, and the recent sequels of “The Fast and the Furious” have taken the franchise in a ridiculous direction that may be irreparable. It’s unfortunate to see Statham’s talents wasted in these roles, as the excessive budgets of these films take away from his unique personality. Scaling things back might be the best way for Statham to return to his roots.
Statham has a golden opportunity ahead of him, given his loyal following who may be interested in any new project he takes on, regardless of genre. If action stars like Stallone and Schwarzenegger have succeeded in comedic roles, there is no reason to believe that Statham couldn’t do the same. He possesses such charisma that avoiding the romantic comedy genre would be a missed chance.
