New owners like Carl Icahn and Steven Witkoff took over, but progress stalled again amidst the pandemic. During this time, the incomplete building was occasionally used by firefighters for training. However, Soffer and Fontainebleau Development reacquired the project in 2021, partnering with Koch Real Estate Investments to finance and complete it. Last month, Mark Tricano, the president of Fontainebleau Las Vegas, informed state gambling regulators that the resort is set to hire over 7,000 employees. The property boasts an impressive 1,300 slot machines, 128 gambling tables, and more than 36 bars and restaurants, some of which feature chefs with Miami roots. Room rates for the opening began at around $300 (£239) a night, according to officials. The Fontainebleau stands as the tallest occupiable building in Nevada and the second-tallest in Las Vegas, after the nearby Strat tower observation deck, which measures 1,149 feet (350 meters). The hotel was built on the site of the El Rancho hotel, which was demolished in 2000 after Soffer and Turnberry Associates purchased it. Fontainebleau sits adjacent to the newest section of the Las Vegas Convention Center, a $1 billion development that opened in January 2021, and offers a stunning view down the Strip of the brightly-lit Sphere concert and entertainment venue that opened in September.
