“Unleashing Wonder Woman 1984: A Candid Conversation with Gal Gadot on Feminism and More”

Gal Gadot loves to spend her quiet time in the serene backyard of her Tel Aviv home. It’s a lovely place surrounded by a stone wall and abundant foliage that gives her the much-needed peace she craves after putting her two daughters to bed. As a mother-of-two, Gadot values this outdoor haven as an escape from her busy schedule. She often spends quality time there to recharge her batteries and unwind. In an attempt to familiarize her daughter Alma with her famous role, Gadot and her husband Jaron Varsano screened Wonder Woman for Alma last year when she was deemed old enough to appreciate it.

Gadot shared that her daughter Alma had mixed emotions while watching her in action in a movie. Although Alma was ecstatic to see her mother fight against the villains, she was also quite nervous and found the scary scenes too much to bear. Despite this, Alma enjoyed the rest of the movie and felt proud of her mother’s remarkable performance. Interestingly, Alma did not take a liking to Sleeping Beauty unlike most Disney princesses because she believed that the prince did not do anything besides rescuing her while she slept. Gadot and her husband were happy to see Alma’s positive outlook towards gender roles portrayed in movies.

In June of 2017, I had the pleasure of experiencing Wonder Woman in a theater in New York City and it was truly unforgettable. The atmosphere was electric with women and girls cheering and hooting throughout the entire film. There were even moments of spontaneous sisterhood when we held hands in excitement. It wasn’t just our theater that had this reaction, reports came in from all over the world of people crying, clapping, and even wearing Wonder Woman’s gear in public and on social media.

For many, the timing of Wonder Woman’s release felt like a much-needed balm after the election of a misogynistic president. Gal Gadot, who played Wonder Woman, embodied the perfect female superhero for this feminist wave. With the upcoming release of Wonder Woman 1984 in December, Gadot is looking forward to audiences continuing to follow her character’s story. This time, the film explores themes of greed and the dangers of constantly striving for more, which is especially relevant in today’s era of endless consumption.

During our conversation on Zoom, Gadot wore a black Helmut Lang tank dress, without makeup, and it’s hard to describe just how beautiful she is without feeling like it’s beside the point. She doesn’t seem interested in discussing her looks; in fact, she worked at Burger King as a teen instead of taking modeling jobs. When she won the Miss Israel pageant in 2004, she was surprised and decided beauty pageants weren’t for her. She even intentionally threw the Miss Universe pageant by acting uncooperative and wearing terrible clothes. Gadot laughed and recalled pretending not to speak English when asked a question by Paula Abdul.

The article showcases a collection of clothes designed by CHANEL along with some stunning photographs taken by Dudi Hasson. The opening sequence of Wonder Woman 1984 features a young Diana Prince engaging in physical competition on Themyscira, her birthplace. Gal Gadot who portrays the adult version of Diana talks about the significance of representation in the media, particularly for young girls. Seeing strong female characters on screen can motivate young girls to dream big and realize their full potential. Gadot also lays emphasis on education and role-modeling to promote equality and prevent incidents of sexual assault. Although progress has been made towards equality, there still remains a long way to go and resources need to be focused on creating tangible change. Gadot’s words remain hopeful for the future and she aspires that her message will encourage others to take action.

This piece centers around Gal Gadot, the talented and gorgeous actress who portrays the main character in the Wonder Woman movies. The director, Patty Jenkins, speaks highly of Gadot’s intelligence, beauty, and strength. Her impressive performance in the first film led her to become one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses. However, despite her success, she still earns less than male action stars, reflecting the ongoing gender pay gap in the industry. Jenkins notes that Gadot is more interested in using her character to do good rather than seeking fame or glory. Chris Pine, who plays Gadot’s love interest in both films, believes that viewers relate to Gadot because she embodies Wonder Woman’s qualities of strength, compassion, fierceness, and an unwavering spirit.

Gal Gadot spent her childhood in Rosh Ha’ayin, a typical middle-class neighborhood in Israel, with her father working as an engineer and her mother encouraging outdoor activities over TV watching. Gadot’s physical prowess is evident in her performances in the Wonder Woman films, where she performs many of her own stunts without relying on CGI effects. After serving in the Israel Defense Forces for two years as a fitness and combat readiness instructor, she pursued higher education and ultimately found herself in Hollywood after being cast in 2009’s Fast Furious as Gisele Yashar. While Gadot always had a love for the arts and movies, acting was not initially on her radar.

Gal Gadot has expressed her gratitude towards her supportive husband, Jaron Varsano, for giving her the courage to pursue her passion for acting. The couple first met at a yoga retreat in Israel’s desert in 2006, and since then, Varsano has been a constant pillar of support for Gadot’s career. Amidst the challenges of juggling motherhood and professional commitments, Varsano has encouraged Gadot to continue working and has been a feminist partner who values equality and mutual respect in their relationship. While being a mother is the most rewarding experience for Gadot, it also brings a sense of guilt that she strives to overcome. She acknowledges her blessings and understands the importance of cherishing every moment. Gadot’s upcoming project is portraying Linnet Ridgeway Doyle in the highly anticipated movie, Death on the Nile.
