The Beekeeper’s Journey: Jason Statham’s Dive into the World of Bees

Dubbed as a thrilling role, Jason Statham embodies the character of Adam Clay in the upcoming action film titled The Beekeeper, scheduled for release on January 12th. In this gripping story, Clay finds himself on a mission to dismantle a corrupt corporation led by the malevolent Derek Danforth, played by Josh Hutcherson. The catalyst for Clay’s pursuit of justice is a close friend who falls victim to the company’s deception.

However, what sets Clay apart is his background as a “beekeeper.” This unique title refers to a secret agent archetype crafted by the ingenious mind of screenwriter Kurt Wimmer. These beekeepers possess exceptional abilities, serving as vigilant guardians of society, ensuring its safety using any means necessary. This clandestine fraternity, as The Beekeeper unfolds, acts as a covert watchdog, observing the inner workings of our world until the system inevitably fails. At that point, they step in, intervening to restore order when societal mechanisms prove insufficient.

Director David Ayer further expands on the concept, highlighting the captivating premise of The Beekeeper. It delves into the existence of a concealed organization dedicated to surveillance and responsible for maintaining equilibrium within our intricate societies. This enthralling narrative promises to take audiences on a cinematic rollercoaster ride, filled with action, intrigue, and the timeless battle between good and evil.

However, there is more to the movie we here at EW Towers refer to as The Bee-qualizer. It seems that the individuals responsible for metaphorically tending to the “bees” in the film are also real-life beekeepers. The concept behind this choice is that by caring for actual swarms of honey-making insects, they can gain insights that will help safeguard the metaphorical community of humanity. Consequently, Statham undertook the task of mastering the skills of an apiarist in order to realistically portray a beekeeper in the opening scenes of the movie.

“In the beginning scene, Jason confidently retrieves the comb and calmly smokes the hive, carrying out each step with precision,” Ayer explains. Ayer, known for his directorial work in movies like Fury and Suicide Squad, adds, “These actions were not simulated. The bees themselves were real. Jason actually took the time to learn these beekeeping techniques. It’s fascinating because, despite his tough persona, he truly embraced the tranquility and mindfulness of beekeeping.”

Was Statham stung by the bees? Or were the bees smart enough to realize that penetrating the tough and impenetrable skin of the famous actor from Crank and Expendables would be a waste of time?
Ayer confirms that Jason did not get stung. Instead, Ayer himself fell victim to multiple bee stings as he operated the camera, capturing close-up shots of the bees – the hero bee shots. The reason behind Ayer’s unfortunate fate was his choice of attire, specifically black socks. It turns out that bees are attracted to black clothing because they mistake it for a bear. This amusing revelation explains why beekeepers opt for white suits.
